Journey North - Migration!

Though the Twin Cities can expect a reminder of winter over the next couple of days, we would like to turn our thoughts to spring.  Nothing does that more so than thinking about the many species of animals that make their annual migration back to northern breeding grounds.  One great website that captures maps and sightings (with YOUR help!) is Journey North. This is a free, internet-based program that explores the interrelated aspects of seasonal change.  Through interrelated investigations, students (and ALL of us are students, too!) discover that sunlight drives all living systems and they learn about the dynamic ecosystem that surrounds and connects them.

One species in particular to keep an eye on are Ruby-throated hummingbirds.  They have already been sighted in the Gulf Coast states.

This project has some great information on what you can do to help species on their migration, as well as how to contribute to it.
