Grossology Camp at TRC

This week TRC hosted Grossology Camp.  Even though some things seem "gross", they are opportunities to learn about the world we share with raptors.  Campers learned why a turkey vulture poops on its feet, and how it stays healthy even though it eats dead animals.  They also looked at the life cycles of some parasites who are "hitch hikers" on raptors.  These "natural recyclers" are an important part of the food chain.

As you have seen from previous posts, owls often eat their food whole.  Their pellets provide a great learning activity.  Our camp leader, Dan, uses a large example of an owl pellet to show what the students might find when they did an actual dissection of pellets later in the class.
