There Is Still Time to Register for Duke Lecture October 10

We still have some seats available for our Duke Lecture October 10.  It is at 5:00pm, at the Bell Museum of Natural History. Our speaker this year is Dr. Thor Hanson.

Dr. Hanson is the author of Feathers: The Evolution of a Natural Miracle, among several other publications.  A New York Times review quotes Dr. Hanson: "Feathers can conceal or attract. They can be vibrantly colored without using pigment. They can store water or repel it. They can snap, whistle, hum, vibrate, boom and whine. They’re a near-perfect airfoil and the lightest, most efficient insulation ever discovered.”

Dr. Hanson’s research and conservation activities have taken him around the globe. He has studied Central American trees and songbirds, nest predation in Tanzania, and the feeding habits of African vultures. He often works at the interface between natural and human systems, and is currently involved in a project assessing the ecological impacts of warfare.

This event is free and open to the public. It is intended for those with a general to intermediate knowledge of birds. RSVP's are required, and this event does fill quickly!

The Duke Lecture Series began in 2006 by Dr. William H. and Mary E. Holleman, lifelong friends of Dr. Gary Duke, co-founder of The Raptor Center. The Hollemans’ gift to establish a lectureship endowment fund pays tribute to Dr. Duke’s work and legacy at the University of Minnesota and The Raptor Center. An annual lecture hosted by The Raptor Center features speakers on the topic of avian medicine, avian conservation, and other pertinent avian topics.
